Gangs: Lessons

Defining Gangs

1 student page
This activity engages the student in understanding what a gang is by comparing the legal definition of a gang to other definitions. Students synthesize their understanding by coming up with their own definition. This activity is suitable for individuals, or small groups and opens opportunity for large group discussion and sharing.

Novel Study: Character Profile

5 Student Pages + 2 Teacher Pages
This activity was created to be used with the novel of your choice (i.e. Outsiders, Durango Street). Students identify the risks and protective factors associated with gang involvement in reference to a character from the book they are reading (you could use a character from film as well). A page for identifying local community resources is also included. This is a useful activity for linking Health/C.A.L.M. Healthy Choices issues, knowledge of community resources and Language Arts.
