Student's Voices
Adult Transition Learning Centre (ATLC) students were given the opportunity to enter their poetry in a contest sponsored by Creative Communication, Inc. The following students had their work selected as poems of merit and published in the book ‘Celebrate! Poets Speak Out’.
Who’s to Know?
Who’s to know where one’s mind goes, like what may be seen in
our day of light?
Who’s to know what others hear in our mind
or in our mighty heart?
Who’s to know what others touch in our rough, smooth,
itty-bitty space of life?
Who’s to know what others smell in our huge, spread out streets
of Edmonton?
Who’s to know what you know?

River
River run deeply, river run far,
Never let me forget river, who you are, who you are
Let me know your island, your streams and your coves
Let me know the beauty of peaceful sun lit shore
River run deeply, river run far,
Never let me forget river, who you are, who you are
Let me hear the gulls cry, the duck and the fish jump by
Let me know the ones you feed, and the ones that come in the summer’s heat
River run deeply, river run far,
Never let me forget river, who you are, who you are
Let me know the beauty of the season in their glow
And then autumn chases winter, let my soul know where you go
River run deeply, river run far,
Never let me forget river, who you are, who you are

Candles
Appealing to the sight with
such beautiful light.
They’re alive.
As they burn their flames turn.
They’re alive.
Dancing away most of the day.
They’re alive.
Just when you think you made
a friend.
They burn out.
You must start again.
It’s not the flame you blame it’s
the wax.

Remembering
I remember
Most beautiful woman
Sitting on the dock
Watching the waters
Rolling and splashing
Also watching the skies
With strong winds
Stormy clouds rolling
I can picture her eyes
Glancing about
At the objects
Bobbing up and over
Off in the distance
In the rolling waves
Of the ocean
There was this smell
Of mouthwash
Very sweet and refreshing
She’s hearing music
Peace sound
Soft and mellow
