Victims Assistance Program (VAP) offers a court preparation package for teens entitled, "Being a Witness: The Real Thing". The package includes an educational video and interactive workbook that we hope will educate and empower teens to be more confident witnesses in criminal court. These materials will help to create an effective and age-appropriate preparation program for teenagers.

Why was there a need for new materials?

In June 1996, VAP began delivery of the Child Witness Court Preparation Program, which is a training curriculum to prepare children and youth for the criminal court process. Children are prepared through the use of a video, activity book, and accompanying educational handouts.

While the format and materials are excellent with young children, teenagers find them too elementary for their learning and interest levels. Since teens, aged 12-17, represent almost 60% of our total child clients, a specialized program aimed specifically at this population was identified as a critical need.

BEING A WITNESS: THE REAL THING

A Video and Workbook for Teen Victims and/or Witnesses going through the Criminal Justice System

This 30 page, full colour workbook enables teens as well as parents and professionals working with teens to familiarize themselves with the criminal court process and what to expect as a witness. It includes visually appealing graphics throughout with interactive activities to engage the reader and promote learning.

This dynamic, 12 minute video discusses valuable information about testifying and what it means to be a teen witness. It includes a “real-life” court scene whereby viewers see a trial in progress and are informed about various court personnel and their respective roles. It also encourages viewers to dispel myths about court by demonstrating that court is not like TV!

The purpose of these materials is to educate and empower teens
to be more confident about testifying in criminal court.
