Volunteer Requirements
In order to volunteer with Edmonton John Howard Society you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months.
- Complete a Criminal Record Check and if applicable, a Child Intervention Check. Please note that EJHS will pay for the checks.
- Submit a volunteer application and your resume to the Volunteer Manager.
- Complete the screening process set out by EJHS.
- Go through Volunteer Orientation and Training prior to starting your role.
Process for Becoming a Volunteer
Step 1 – Submit Application & Resume

Step 2 – Notification of Application
You will be notified by email or phone once your application has been received and processed. At this time, we will schedule an interview with you.
Step 3 – Initial Interview
The Volunteer Manager will meet with you to discuss your reasons for volunteering, interests and expectations, availability, understanding of our core values, and your skills, strengths, qualifications and experience.
During the initial interview, you will be asked to fill out a Criminal Record Check and, if applicable, a Child Intervention Check. Edmonton John Howard Society will cover the cost of the checks.
After the initial interview, the Volunteer Manager will contact your references.
Step 4 – Second Interview with Unit/Program Supervisor
After successful completion of Steps 2 and 3, you will be interviewed by the unit/program supervisor, in your area of interest, to ensure a good fit between you and the program.
Step 5 – Orientation & Training
Once you have successfully completed the second interview, you will receive appropriate training for your new volunteer role. Training includes participation in a general Volunteer Orientation Session and individual training that is specific to your role in the unit/program. Orientation and unit training must be completed before you begin your volunteer role.
