Part Time Casual Nurse
101 Street Apartments

Edmonton John Howard Society is a community based crime prevention agency. 101 Street Apartments, a 33 bed, Community Based Residential Facility which requires a part time, casual nurse, for adult males with multiple mental and physical health barriers.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • Current Registration in the Province of Alberta
  • Diploma in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing
  • Previous clinical experience in psychiatric mental health nursing with knowledge, skill, and ability in assessment, treatment and evaluation of clients.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health assessment and psychopharmacology.
  • Knowledge and skills relating to crisis intervention and ability in the application of non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Experience and knowledge of the treatment of dual diagnosis clients.
  • Broad knowledge of the care and treatment of common chronic physical illnesses and disabilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge base of major mental disorders and treatments.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of relevant health care legislation and the Criminal Code of Canada, as it pertains to mentally disordered offenders.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Valid Fist Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and related computer software.

Duties and Responsiblities

  • Required to attend weekly psychiatric clinics and maintain appropriate clinical records and progress notes.
  • Liaison with on site case workers, parole officers, CBRF psychiatrist, program facilitators and other related professionals.
  • Contribute to case conferences and treatment planning.
  • Monitor and manage client medications and treatments.
  • Provide referrals for the continuing care of all clients.
  • Crisis management and suicide risk assessment.
  • 1 to 1 meetings and assessment of ongoing client needs and treatment.
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of new staff and clients with relation to psychiatric illness, medical treatments, and psychopharmacology.
  • Share all relevant information regarding client treatment and care.

  • Starting hours of 8 to 10 hours per week.
  • Flexible work days and hours according to psychiatric clinics and current need.
  • Ability to develop, customize, and implement procedures within the guidelines and needs of the CBRF.
